As per a statement release today, Darren O’Dea is finalizing
a transfer deal. Our captain, talked about earlier in the year to be a key
component of core group of young guys, O’Dea being 26, they wanted to keep for the next 4-6
years is now gone.
This move is not one O’Dea wanted to make, tweeting out
after the news broke;
“For every1 asking I'm discussing terms with another team. Not what I
want! Not got a choice! I'll update you when things are clearer!”
O’Dea’s cap hit was said to be in and around $500,000, a
large piece of the total cap but with how bad our defence has been in the past I
do not think we can let go a player that is a constant competitor for this
team, a former Celtic player, and current member of the Irish national
team.
This news is just another punch to the stomach after another
supposed part of that core group, Luis Silva (24 years old) overall 4th
pick of the 2012 MLS Draft, being traded to DC United for allocation
money. For those that don’t know
allocation money is “fake” money that allows teams to lessen the cap hit of a
player’s contract. For example if you have a player with a $250,000 contract
and $100,000 in allocation money, you can make that players cap hit only
$150,000.
These moves have been made to free up cap space for the
often talked about transfer of two-three impact players. I like to hear that they are bringing in new
talent because we know that the current setup of players cannot get it
done. But, the name heard most is Diego
Forlan, a 34 year old Striker/Winger, whose best times are behind him
specifically the 2010 World Cup where he tied for the lead in goals.
Giving up a solid MLS defender to be able to have the chance
of getting an over the hill attacking player who might give us one good year
was too much of a price to pay in my opinion.
But if through these maneuvers also bring in a young player
that can have an impact for years to come it might work out.
As with everything TFC has done this season we will just
have to wait and see.
